Continuing Education Units (CEU)

Western Michigan University is an approved sponsor of the Continuing Education Unit (CEU), as well as the State Board Continuing Education Unit (SB-CEU). The CEU is a way to measure and record a permanent record of non-credit training and education experiences for an individual.

Western Michigan University defines one CEU as ten contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience. The CEU can be awarded in whole units or fractions of a unit; 5 hours = .5 CEU; 10 hours = 1.0 CEU. At WMU, a contact hour is 60 minutes of instruction. Programs must be at least 3 hours to qualify.  Non-instructional portions of a program or experience (i.e., registration, breaks, meals) are not included in the computation of contact hours.

Those who provide workshops or seminars who wish to offer CEUs will need to complete a CEU application form and submit it to WMU. The application will be reviewed and the sponsor will be notified of the CEU award or denial of award. We must have your application a minimum of 35 days prior to the start of the program.

State Board Continuing Education Units (SB-CEU)

State Board Continuing Education Units are an inexpensive way for Michigan teachers, administrators and school psychologists to acquire the credits necessary for recertification. Three SB-CEUs equal one semester hour of college credit. In a five-year period teachers who hold Professional or Occupational certificates, school psychologists and school administrators need to earn:

  • 6 semester hours of college credit
  • 18 SB-CEUs or
  • A combination of both
